Another World
It seems like another life has passed since we first met.
Two kids oblivous to the world around them as they marched in lines with their fellow cadets, only soon realizing they were from not only the same place but also the same era.
Era? Yes, because the two of us were poets in the making, unknown to ourselves as we marched to the beats of our drums and no one else's because that was all we knew how to do, or at least what we fought to do.
For years we were each others sounding boards, the others home and happy place.
We were the other half that we were searching for.
For years we were like this, and for years you were who I wanted to be around.
Pushing each other to write and be who we were despite all the odds that surrounded us.
You wanted to be a history teacher, and I wanted to be an English teacher.
We wanted to change the world one student at a time, and make damned sure nobody ever had to deal with what we survived.
But as time went on we began driving on different roads, where our streets stopped connecting and our worlds parted.
You choose a life of somewhat luxury with a miss teen, a beauty queen, a little dream house and a fancy school.
While I traveled the road less taken by most, choosing to move far from everything I had ever know, to escape the past that haunted me.
Years have passed since we were even in the same place.
Yet one night stands alone from it all, when I was home on suspension from school, I begged you to come out with me for my birthday, it was the first time we had seen each other since we had both started down different paths, yet no time had passed as I looked up at you in your same old clothes.
You never changed in all the years, wearing plain old shirts and zip ups... I was the one who had changed, the girl who was afraid of her shadow was gone and the fearless one had arrived at the bar.
Yet you still saw through the jacket, makeup and smirk, you still saw me.
We've survived hell, beaten all the odds and still wound up back in the same boat.
You're going away to study, further than I ever will more thank likely but the thing is I want to jump on the plane with you and for once leave everything to do the right thing and not run away.
I am no stranger to leaving anything behind but I am to being around the right people, and that is someone you've always been.
In another world we probably would have ended up in the same school, doing what we wanted to do, hell we'd be doing our teaching degrees now and preparing to find jobs somewhere not on the island due to the fact we both hated it.
Maybe we were meant to fall together later in life so that we could reach what we are meant to do, or maybe this is just a chance encounter, two old friends and flames in the same harbor once more for one last drink at the pub before last call.
Either way, we owe it to who we were to do this.
Plus if our other world selves ever heard we stopped talking our asses would have been kicked by now.
So I'll see you by the water.
